I f*cking hate blogger and I f*cking hate the internet. I just spent about an hour tying to botch a way of putting this text under the following images but OH NO, the f*cking CODE says otherwise. MOTHER F*CK THE INTERNET!
Ok so I'll try and make this quick.
We started this project by drawing random words out a hat. The words were custom and reversal. That become the project brief. I printed the Japanese equivalents of the word custom using lino. I did this because I am a big fan of the Japanese language, especially when its written down and because I haven't printed for a long, long time.
The Japanese version of the word custom (at least the one I used) means the type of custom that someone has for themselves. A set way of going doing something. The text on the print is a personal statement against one of my customs; a form of creative laziness based on negativity, a lack of confidence and minimal self belief. As well as being a statement of of intent for reversing (putting in the opposite direction) my set way of going about a project, the statement is also reversed in actuality, through the nature of the printing process. I choose not to cut a mirror image (as is standard practice when printing in this way) meaning the text is reversed when printed. The happy accident of this was that it made the statement seem more pictorial, which is my favorite thing about the japanese written language.
To go along with my new found lack of boundaries and constraint I simply stared printing, without really deciding how I was going to go about it. I knew I wanted to print more than once but that was it. Some of them came out well, others not so good. None of it was perfect and in a sense, thats what this project was all about.
I learned the value in just diving in and doing what feels right, even if there's a chance it could all go wrong. I aim to do it more often.
